Yesterday, I went back to the place that taught me everything I know about art and design, Newham College in East London.
Walking through those doors, I could feel that same energy I had all those years back. The building may have changed in the last 32 years but that youthful spirit was definitely there. My old Art teacher was still there too!
Talking with current Art, Design and Fashion students, I could see their passion for their work, something which can get lost along the way when you start to work in the industry. Wide-eyed and ready to go, they listened eagerly as I told them my story.
Looking in from the outside, setting up a business from nothing and about something you are passionate about looks easy. I shared my stories of the tough times, turning points, how I create products and where it has and hasn’t worked.
As I left, I realised that I had also taken something from this experience. The raw energy and drive of the students taught me to never stop and motivated me in a way that I hadn’t felt since I was learning there.
Now I ‘m going to continue to work with this department, making more visits, assessing their work and keeping up with London’s latest talent.
